EMBL Science and Society Conference: Infectious Diseases: Past, Present, and Future http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261185&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261185&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

November 15 - 16, 2018

An astronomical number of microbes live in and on our bodies. They are normally harmless and help our body perform vital tasks, but some can cause disease, spread from person to person, and even result in full-blown epidemics. Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that infiltrate the body’s natural barriers and multiply to produce illnesses, which can range from mild to deadly. Although progress has been made to treat many infectious diseases, humankind is constantly vulnerable to a wide array of both resurgent and new microorganisms.

October 3 – 6, 2018

Before the genetic information stored in DNA can be used to direct cell growth and metabolism, it has to be transferred into RNA.  Messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are key components in the transmission of genetic information in all life forms - from viruses to complex mammalian organisms. Exciting recent findings have revealed a remarkable degree of complexity in the lives of mRNAs and the field is rapidly developing.

September 16 – 19, 2018

Human microbiota - the collection of microbes living in and on our body - have a significant impact on human health and well-being. They have been associated with numerous diseases, yet we have barely understood their role in the context of life-style and genetics. Various initiatives are underway around the world to survey the human microbiota at several body sites, characterise them, understand their interactions with the human hosts, elucidate their role in diseases, and design possible therapeutic or dietary interventions.

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

September 5 – 8, 2018

Chromosomes are arguabely one of the most important structures inside cells. Several meters of DNA are compacted into micrometer-sized assemblies in every human cell. Recent advances in our understanding of how this is achieved, and of its implications on nuclear functions, have been breathtaking. Instead of black boxes, or imaginary text-book style folding models, advanced imaging and genomics techniques have layed the foundation for the first well-informed molecular models of chromsomes. These portray chromosomes as largley self-organising entities of nucleosome-melts, organised by the universal SMC complexes and additional chromosomal proteins. Recent work culminated in the biochemical reconstitution of chromosome formation from defined components (Hirano).
This Symposium would put the spotlight on the biochemical and biophysical composition and architecture of chromosomes. It would go from single molecule observation of the constituent proteins, via systems level approaches to understand behaviour of entire chromosomes, up to discussion of human disease mechanisms, caused by mutations in chromosomal constituents.

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

July 24 – 27, 2018

This workshop will bring together and help establish an emerging community with the common goal of four dimensional reconstruction of mammalian development. A number of longstanding questions surrounding the early development of mammals have been inaccessible to molecular research due to technical limitations and poor physical accessibility of these processes. How is the body plan established in the early embryo? How is morphogenesis coordinated with lineage specification? The recent revolutions in advanced light microscopy and bioimage informatics have opened up completely new avenues to address these questions and make fundamental advances in our understanding of the developing mammalian embryo.

EMBL Conference: Microfluidics 2018: New Technologies and Applications in Biology, Biochemistry and Single-Cell Analysis http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261175&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261175&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

July 15 – 17, 2018

Microfluidics is a quickly growing, highly interdisciplinary field at the interface of physics, engineering, chemistry and biology. Over the past years microfluidic approaches have been used for a variety of applications, including nucleotide sequencing, functional genomics, single cell/ single molecule studies and diagnostics. Many of these applications, including next-generation sequencing devices, have been revolutionised by miniaturisation, paving the way for global gene analysis and hence transforming biology. In addition, working on the pico- to nanoliter scale not only allows a high degree of parallelisation, but also offers superb spatiotemporal control. Small objects such as cells, or even discrete parts thereof, can be exposed to unique conditions, facilitating entirely novel approaches in modern biology and chemistry. The EMBL Microfluidics Conference 2018 aims to bring together top researchers in the field and to spark scientific exchange, also across different disciplines. The latest Lab-on-a-Chip technologies and applications will be presented, which should be of major interest for experts as well as scientists looking for a first glance at this exciting new technology.

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

June 24 – 27, 2018

This symposium will build on the first meeting which took place in 2016. Microbiologists and immunologists will again come together to provide different viewpoints on the same problems in joint sessions. While maintaining continuity in topics, the meeting concept will be evolved by introducing novel sessions on bacterial defenses against innate immunity, an area prominently covered by abstract submissions in the 2016 meeting, and on fungus host interactions, an under-researched area of great medical importance.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Biological Oscillators: Design Mechanism, Function http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261173&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261173&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

June 3 – 5, 2018

Oscillations are abundant - from hormonal oscillations with periods of days and months, to genetic fluctuations in the range of hours (circadian clock, embryonic oscillators), and metabolic and biochemical oscillations in the order of minutes (glycolytic oscillations) and seconds (Calcium-dynamics) - oscillations are central to biology across different temporal and spatial scales. At this symposium, multiple disciplines will come together in order to discuss common mechanisms underlying the generation of oscillations.
This symposium aims to further strengthen a new, highly interdisciplinary community composed of scientists from very different fields and who share a common interest in oscillatory phenomena and biological dynamics. As such, this meeting provides a unique platform for this emerging new community working at the interface between quantitative biology, complex oscillatory systems and physics.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Cellular mechanisms Driven by Liquid Phase Separation http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261170&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261170&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

May 14 – 17, 2018

Liquid phase separation is emerging as a common biophysical basis underlying many important cellular functions. This conference will bring together scientist from soft matter polymer physics, molecular “un” structural biologists, cell biologists and developmental biologists

- to increase the awareness in cell/developmental biology for how important phase separation is for our understanding of many biological processes;

- to explore the large repertoire of new tools generated by other disciplines that are ripe to be applied to complex cell/developmental biology problems related to phase separation;

- to close the gap in human potential and transdisciplinary training to tackle the role of phase separation in biology.

The symposium will help to push this emerging topic onto the world-wide stage, but in particular Europe, and vice versa facilitate European researchers access to this emerging topic.

EMBO|EMBL Symposium: DNA Replication: From Basic Biology to Disease http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261169&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261169&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

May 7 – 10, 2018

There has been tremendous progress in the past few years regarding our understanding of DNA replication in eukaryotes, both yeast and mammals. Many important questions in the field are poised to be answered within the next decade. These include understanding DNA replication at the biochemical and three-dimensional protein structure levels. In addition, studies using high throughput technologies at the cellular and organismal levels are poised to answer how accurate replication of the genome is ensured by controlling origin firing in space and time.

Several human diseases, including cancer, have already been linked to DNA replication stress, a term that refers to perturbations in DNA replication. Thus, a better understanding of how cells respond to DNA replication stress will help us understand disease development and responses to therapy. By bringing together experts in the basic biology of DNA replication and DNA replication stress, this symposium aims to fuel further progress in these important fields.

EMBO Workshop: Integrating Systems Biology: From Networks to Mechanisms to Models http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261166&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261166&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

April 15 – 17, 2018

Two facets of systems biology are the generation of increasingly comprehensive network maps of the physical and functional interactions between biomolecules in cells, and the development of quantitative models of processes based on a detailed mechanistic understanding of a given pathway. However, only for few biological processes the mechanistic knowledge is sufficient to enable quantitative modeling. On the other hand, incorporating proteome-scale network-based connections into quantitative models is difficult, in part due missing knowledge on the functional effects, physiological context, and biological consequences of mapped interactions. At this conference, we will discuss novel computational and experimental approaches to bridge this ‘mechanistic gap’ and hear about current trends in network mapping and analysis.

EMBO Workshop: Microglia 2018 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261165&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261165&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

March 18 – 21, 2018

This workshop will bring together expert and novice researchers studying microglia physiology in health and disease in an interactive meeting format that promotes the latest work in the field. The study of microglia cells has seen an explosion of activity and interest in the last five years, with large numbers of new researchers entering the field driven by the advent of new imaging and genetic tools that have allowed the visualisation and manipulation of microglia in the context of the intact brain.

The workshop will highlight the latest research by including a large fraction of speakers from among submitted abstracts. It will also bring together researchers with diverse technical and scientific expertise in order to stimulate interdisciplinary research at the boundaries of traditional fields and will feature ample opportunity for informal interaction among participants.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Tissue Self-Organisation: Challenging the Systems http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261164&Itemid=22 http://biocrowd.com/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=entry&id=261164&Itemid=22

EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany

March 11 – 14, 2018

This EMBO/EMBL symposium aims at mechanistic understanding of self-organising properties of multi-cellular systems. One of the defining features of living systems is their capacity to break symmetry and self-organise to form reproducible shapes and patterns. However, its mechanistic understanding remains a challenge as it requires a joint effort of multi-disciplinary teams. This Symposium will bring together those working in distinct disciplines such as cell and developmental biology, tissue biophysics, theoretical modeling, organoids and synthetic biology, and provide a platform to discuss and identify key approaches and future collaborations.
